Ways to deal with chronic pain

An interview with Dr. Don Williams, D.C. By Suzie Daggett
Special to The Union February 3, 2006

Chronic pain is your body’s way of getting your attention, letting you know that it wants to be healed. The question then becomes, how do you treat the pain that seems so firmly stuck in your physical body? What can be done to change it, remove it, cure it and heal it?

Doctors, whether traditional or alternative, have many effective tools to assist the body in remembering the point of pain, thus finding a route to remove it. It is up to you to find the doctor or modality that best matches your needs.

This is not always an easy or quick fix. I talk to many people who are searching for relief from chronic pain by discovering the root of the situation. Dr. Don Williams, D.C., a chiropractor for more than 24 years, uses the Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique (B.E.S.T.) developed by Dr. MT Morter, Jr. as well as functional diagnostic tests such as the computerized thermographic scan and saliva PH testing to assist his patients in addressing the root cause of acute and chronic pain and illness.

What is Dr. Morter’s B.E.S.T. Health System about?
Dr. Morter created a system of addressing disease and restoring health by balancing the Body/Mind/ Memory/Soul energy fields. The theory is that when your energy field is out of balance, which can be due to an emotional memory or physical accident, symptoms appear and health deteriorates. The B.E.S.T. system works with the muscles to remove and reset patterns on the cellular level.

Since muscles control structure, you have to update the tissues first on the cellular level. Two things have to happen for good physical function: the message has to get from the brain to the body and then from the body back to the brain in a feedback circuit; and, the message has to be appropriate for present time need. The pathways may be clear, but the message may be inappropriate. This means you are responding to a past experience in memory, rather than what is needed in the NOW. This is what we call a timing problem.

A simple analogy would be your car’s engine. If the wires are faulty the impulse cannot get to the spark plugs to ignite the fuel in the cylinder. Alternatively, if the car’s computer is jammed it may send the impulse at the wrong time to the spark plugs, again resulting in poor ignition/function, but for a different reason.

By working with certain pressure points, the nervous system is treated, as is the fascia. Fascia is the living matrix of tissue that holds and connects everything in our body.

The fascia is highly nerve sensitive. It’s an instant communication system that transfers electron information from particles into waves throughout the body. This allows your body and mind to be in constant and instantaneous communication so they can respond to the NOW.

Also, the Morter Health System helps to identify how your thinking can be changed to reduce your stress level. In this health system, it is important to recognize that the choices we make for our eating, drinking, exercising, resting, breathing, and thinking can lead to continued good health or chronic dysfunction.

Why is chronic pain such a big problem for our society?
One of my specialties is working with chronic situations to discover the underlying causes. I ask, “Why is this body not repairing itself? I may find a pattern in the nervous system that keeps recurring, thus creating chronic pain and dysfunction. Remember, this is not at the conscious level; it all happens in the subconscious mind. The body responds subconsciously through the autonomic nervous system. There are more than one hundred million impulses bombarding the brain stem with information every second.

Can you imagine being conscious of breathing or reminding your organs and glands to do what they do naturally? Thankfully, it is all orchestrated for us. However, as long as the body is in a certain subconscious holding pattern, it will not change until a new stimulus is introduced. Our bodies were designed to respond to present time physical input only, adapting and responding to the stresses of our immediate environment.

However, we have free will and we can choose to do otherwise with our conscious mind. We can be imprinted by past experiences (a bad memory, a relationship that went sour, something that has not been forgiven) that are not processed; then we are stuck. We are running that old tape without awareness. This is the mental/emotional body which imprints on the subconscious level. It continues to run that tape, eventually affecting the physical body.

The body is not designed to be sick. It is designed to survive. It can and will survive as best it possibly can, given the choices of your lifestyle. If you survive well, we call it health, if not, we call it disease. Adrenal exhaustion is also a big problem in our society today. Many of us are living in chronic stress mode. The stress chemicals that the adrenals produce are necessary for emergency survival, but prolonged production causes toxicity and pain.
